Riders trounce rivals

Two Welkom horse riders Ryan Martin and Shaylene Basson excelled in the Penbritte Thoroughbred Series finals.


Two Welkom horse riders Ryan Martin and Shaylene Basson excelled in the Penbritte Thoroughbred Series finals.

Ryan was the 1 m champion and Shaylene the reserve champion in 80 cm in the Thoroughbred Challenge.

This contest is held for retired racehorses who start a second career with show jumping.

The final was presented from 26 to 28 August. Ryan and his horse Kadush were crowned the 1 m champions in the thoroughbred class.

He also won all his classes with his other horses, Callaho Larina and Volmoed Astrant.

The competition was presented by Penbritte in collaboration with SA Show Jumping.

Ryan is ranked ninth overall in South Africa in the 1 m category, and is the thoroughbred of the year reserve champion.

Shaylene and Galileo are the reserve champions in the 80 cm category.

Both riders attend Belinda’s Riding School (BRS) Equestrian Centre near Riebeeckstad, and are trained by Belinda Basson.

Ryan and his horse Kadush were crowned the 1 m champions in the thoroughbred class.
