The news of the untimely passing of Connie Chuime (72) has sent shockwaves throughout Matjhabeng, the country, continent and the rest of the world.

She passed away on Tuesday, 13 August, following a brief hospitalisation at a Johannesburg hospital.

Chuime was a well-known international star, who was born in 1952 in Thabong, Welkom.

The multi-award-winning actress appeared in the Marvel film Black Panther and starred in several South African TV shows including Rhythm City, Zone 14 and most recently, Gomora.

Chuime was raised at 9 Chuime Street, Thabong, Welkom.

The street was named after her late municipal police father, Baba Right Chuime, who was a strict disciplinarian. Chuime had her primary schooling done at both the Thabong and Iketsetseng primary schools, before she proceeded to the Lebogang Secondary School.

Afterwards, she enrolled at the Bensonvale High School in Herschel, Eastern Cape, where she spent seven years completing her matric and teacher’s certificates.

She then went to train as a nurse at the Thembisa Hospital and qualified as a professional nurse.

However, she never practiced either of those professions as she ventured into theatre, travelling to several countries overseas in the process.

When small and big screen opportunities availed themselves, she grabbed them with both hands and displayed her talent, winning several honours as a gifted actress along the way.

Dr Maramane Tshabalala, a childhood friend of the deceased, was overwhelmed with emotions, saying the news of her friend’s passing was untimely and unexpected because there were no signs that she was struggling with her health.

“My friend was always bubbly and positive. At no point did she indicate to me during our regular check-ups that she wasn’t well. I’m deeply hurt and saddened by her sudden departure,” she said.
