One of Matjhabeng’s oldest residents and a landmark figure in the world of education in Kutlwanong and Thabong, turned 90 years old on Thursday, 15 May.

A momentous family celebration took place on 17 May, during which Lydia Motlagosebatho Molatedi was honoured amidst loving family members and friends.

Molatedi contributed immensely towards the education system in both the Kutlwanong and Thabong communities, having been a teacher for most of her adult life.

“My grandmother and my grandfather, Tshedi Michael Molatedi, were both renowned teachers. My grandfather served as a headmaster during his lifetime, and their children also followed in their footsteps,” says granddaughter, Bontle Molatedi.

“My grandparents met in Odendaalsrus and attended the Moroka High School in Thaba Nchu. They were married in Moroka in 1954.

“They were blessed with their first child in 1956,” Bontle shared.

In total, the couple had six children – three sons and three daughters. Grandfather Molatedi passed away in 1989, at the age of 59.

Matriarch Molatedi’s eldest daughter, Makgaje Angelina Molatedi, is still alive. Altogether, Molatedi’s children have produced 19 grandchildren, which has led to 18 great-grandchildren.

Molatedi taught in Kutlwanong at the Icoseng Public School, Rearabetswe Secondary School and, lastly, the Leboneng Special School in Thabong, Welkom, until she retired at the age of 57.
