Ryan Martin (16) will be competing in the South African Equestrian Federation’s (SAEF) South African Youth Championships (U18) from 10 to 16 December in Shongweni, Durban, with his three horses: Kadush, Callaho Larina and Volmoed Astrant.
He will compete individually in show jumping, equitation and showing (working hunter and show hunter).
Ryan was also selected to represent the Free State as part of the 90 cm and 1 m show jumping team, the showing challenge team, and the equitation intermediate team.
Ryan is the only show jumper and equitation rider in the Free State team.
He has also been included in the combined Free State and KwaZulu-Natal showing team, and the combined Free State and Mpumalanga equitation team with show jumping.
Ryan competed in graded shows during the year to gain points.
In the South African Show Jumping Junior League (U18), he is currently graded first in the 1 m show jumping class with Kadush, second with Callaho Larina in the Free State, and first with Volmoed Astrant in the 90 cm class.
He gained sufficient qualifying points in the graded shows and is currently ranked 16th in the country with Kadush.
Ryan competed in six graded competitions during the course of the year and won five of the six, with one second place. He lost to the nr. 1-ranked rider by a decisecond – a 10th of a second.
Ryan was chosen to represent the Free State at the South African Youth Championships with Kadush and Volmoed Astrant in show jumping, with Callaho Larina in the intermediate equitation team, and with Kadush in the challenge showing team.
Ryan competed in six graded competitions during the year and won five of the six, with one second place.
