Following the brutal gang rape and assault of a Meloding woman, the men of that community have come out in full force in a show of unity against gender-based violence and crimes.

“The residents are still in shock after suspected gang members raped a 21-year-old woman. The men of the community have come forward to assist the SAPS to eradicate crime in their residential area. They will be trained as community patrollers,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the SAPS in Lejweleputswa.

Thakeng says on 17 February at about 18:00 members of Social Crime Prevention, led by Capt. Daniel Kareli, held a mass meeting in Sector 4.

“This was to encourage residents to police themselves through the Community Patrolling initiative. The men came in large numbers, which is an indication that residents are sick and tired of crime taking place in their residential area.”

Kareli and Nomalanga Nikelo, deputy chairperson of the community policing forum (CPF), gave guidelines as to what is expected of a community patroller.

“They emphasised that the patrollers will be working under the supervision of SAPS members for guidance in terms of the law. They were told that residents do not take the law into their own hands, but they must hand suspects over to the police so that the wheels of justice can turn against perpetrators of crimes.”

Nikelo also encouraged residents to be part of the CPF so that they can be made aware of the crime pattern analysis and hotspots in the Meloding policing precinct.

  • A seventh suspect has been arrested and the manhunt for the other three continues.
