A 26-year-old man who boarded what he thought to be a bona fide taxi in Naudeville, Welkom, was accosted and robbed of R800 by armed assailants.

On 23 October, the man got into a white Toyota Conquest, registration number HCL 208 FS, that posed as a taxi. He asked to be taken to the Welkom CBD.

“There was a driver and two other passengers in the vehicle. The vehicle drove to the outskirts of Welkom towards the Bultfontein road. The two passengers drew knives and the driver drew a handgun,” says Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.

Thakeng says they searched the victim and took his money. They then pulled him out of the vehicle, and left him there. The victim was not injured.

A case of Armed Robbery is being investigated.

“Residents of Naudeville and other suburbs are sternly warned to ensure that they use a vehicle with taxi cab sign/light on it. This will indicate that it is a real taxi,” says Thakeng.

Anyone with information to trace the bogus taxi and its occupants, must please contact the Welkom Police on 079-886-5574 or phone the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
