Due to heavy rain the week before, the scheduled November flea market was hastily shifted to the third weekend of the month.
“We noticed that this had a dramatic effect on the number of exhibitors and the attendees. Yet, despite not having the regular crowd, the Welkom Publicity Association’s November flea market was a resounding success,” says Brian Emmenis, WPA chairman.
“For all of us, the WPA has had a year filled with huge challenges as far as the erratic weather and the famous presidential visit, which created havoc.
“Despite these challenges the WPA is all geared for the much anticipated Christmas flea market on 10 December.”
Emmenis says that apart from the rain another major challenge was the never ending loadshedding, which on its own created absolute chaos.
Emmenis says a large variety of smaller markets have sprung up all over the place and this is resulting in the anticipated big spend that would normally take place at the Welkom flea market to dwindle.
The WPA board is scheduled to meet to discuss this and work out an exciting strategy for 2023.
“I am very optimistic that hopefully things can turn around for the better. We are priviledged to have such a nice, neat and safe venue for our flea market smack bang in the centre of Welkom.
“We had our very first flea market in 1984, and the WPA and the Welkom flea market are still going strongly,” says Emmenis.
