There is still one more day to go to before the Sparkling Stars awards’ Mediclinic Welkom Vista Eskom Athletic Club Free State road race.

This is the 22nd year that this prestigious road race will be presented throughout the streets of Welkom.

Lace up your sneakers or comfortable shoes and get to the starting line tomorrow (30 August) at the Mediclinic hospital’s main gate.

“Runners will enjoy the ‘Sparkling Star Celebration’ themed race in honour of women, their families, and friends in Women’s Month.

“Take up the challenge and motivate your friends, colleagues, and business associates to enter a fun-filled road race. With the well-known Capital Sounds broadcasting unit in our midst, lots of excitement, entertainment, and music await you. Do not forget the 15 different water points, sponsors, and all other stakeholders on the route who will motivate and support you throughout the walk or race.

“At the finish line you will become the proud owner of a newly designed gold medal for all participants,” says Hilde du Plessis, chairperson for the race and event organiser.

This race caters to everyone. From the 1,6 km children’s race (seven to 15 years, with a R30 entry fee), 1,6 km Masters race (60 years and older, R50 entry fee), the 5 km fun run for women, R70 entry fee), and the new open 5 km category for both men and women (R100 entry fee) which includes a temporary number if not registered with an athletic club.

Participants in wheelchairs can race in a category specially made for people with a disability (R30 entry fee), with the option to be assisted by a family member or friend for an additional R30.

“By entering the race, you support Cansa, the Charlotte Moll Haven, and will be part of the South African National Blood Service’s (SANBS) awareness campaign outreach,” says Du Plessis. Online entries can be done at entryninja.com.

There are numerous lucky prizes to be won, from pre-entering the race either manually or online, or lucky draws from entrants in either the 1,6 km or open 5 km road race, or 5 km women’s fun run race.

Medals, incentives, and lucky draw prizes will be awarded to the top runners in the various categories. There are also sponsored prizes that will be awarded on the day of the event.

The newly designed Pro-Laser trophy will be awarded for the top three positions in the different races. The school with the most entries in the open 5 km and 5 km fun run will qualify for a laptop, sponsored by Lesedi ICT. In addition, two tablets have been sponsored for a lucky draw for the 5 km open and 5 km fun run.

The winners of the most entries for the open 5 km road race, and 5 km fun run for women by a business or a sports club will receive a lucky prize.

The Spirit and Best Dressed awards will be for individual and group participants. They must submit one photograph or short video recording of less than 30 seconds via WhatsApp to 072-054-3658 or 072-499-2602. Please add the group name and also the name and surname of all appearing on the photo or videos.

The top three water points that embrace the 22nd celebration, which include the best spirit, most inspiring, best decorated, going green and clean race, will be the trophy winners.
