The Setshabelo Primary School in Thabong won in both the category for best project and the category for best song in the Destea Enviro Quiz held on Friday (21/10) and Saturday.

This year the competition, celebrating its 29th year, took place at the Gariep Forever Resort. It is presented under the auspices of the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Destea).

The weekend was filled with fun and learning for the 15 finalists’ schools.

This year, 156 schools across the province, with a total of 4 864 learners, took part and improved their knowledge about environmental and waste management.

The theme for the quiz was: “Paper waste . . . does it really matter?”

The Enviro Quiz Programme aims to work towards a clean, green, healthy and more sustainable environment and to teach Gr. 6 learners to think critically about their environment. Furthermore, participation is encouraged to solve some of the environmental problems in their respective schools.

The top five of the 15 schools’ finalists, from number one to five, are: the Hoërskool Hoopstad, the St Andrews Primary School, the Eunice Primary School, the Vredefort Primary School and the Setshabelo Primary School.

According to judges, the competition was very tight and the assignments produced were of very high quality.

Stakeholders agree that a partnership between government and the private sector is key for programmes like Enviro Quiz to succeed.
