The outbreak of diarrhoea and cholera is on the rise in South Africa.
The Free State Health Department can confirm that there are no cholera or diarrhoea-related deaths in the Free State. The eight confirmed cases of cholera in the province are all in Vredefort, and those afflicted have all been treated and discharged.
“We have to work together, consistently, to curb any potential spread of infections and also make sure that the identified cases get treated immediately.” said Zwelibanzi Qamkana, communications officer for Lejweleputswa’s Department of Health.
- Symptoms of cholera are often mild and can begin as soon as a few hours or within five days after infection. They typically include: Large volumes of severe, watery diarrhoea, sometimes called “rice water stool” because it can look like water that has been used to wash rice,) vomiting, and) leg cramps.
All are urged to keep clean and wash their hands, as regularly as possible, with water and soap. If there is no soap and water available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol.
