Practicality ensures win

Omphile Choane, a matriculant and RCL Chairperson 2022 at the Welkom High School has been selected as a national finalist in the Food, Energy and Water category of the Modiragatsi Competition.

This competition is an innovation for the youth hosted by the North-West University (NWU) Business School in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and sponsored by SETA and Siemens.

Competitors had to identify a problem in their communities that they think could be solved by a mobile app or electronic device.

This had to be submitted on a Z-minutes video briefly describing a problem and how they plan to solve it.On 7 April the national semi-finalists were chosen. There were 81 teams with 146 participants. They attended a 12 week online mentorship programme to develop their ideas at the end of the mentorship programme. Teams had to submit a video presentation and a final report to be selected at the national finalists in six categories.

Between 25 and 29 July, the finalist had an interview with the panel of judges and potential investors had to decide on the overall winner.

Omphile was also selected as the Top 15-finalist in the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) Entrepreneurial Matriculant of the year competition.
