Pastor sentenced to 55-years

The South African Police Service has welcomed the substantial sentence imposed by the Free State High Court upon Sabata Mariti, a 41-year-old former pastor from Virginia who exploited his religious authority to commit serious sexual crimes against young members of his congregation.

Mariti, who operated a local church and cultivated a reputation amongst his followers for performing purported miracles, received an effective prison term of 55 years after being convicted on three counts of rape.

Abuse of spiritual authority

The court heard damning evidence detailing how Mariti systematically exploited his position of spiritual leadership to groom and abuse young female congregants. His victims, ranging in age from 13 to 23 years, were required to attend daily church sessions and frequently remained overnight at Mariti’s residence for prayer gatherings.

The crimes occurred during July and August 2022. In the initial incident during July 2022, Mariti summoned three girls to his private quarters under the false pretence of requiring assistance with social media content. After instructing one victim to massage his feet, the girl fell asleep, only to awaken and discover Mariti sexually assaulting another 15-year-old congregant.

The pastor subsequently raped a 17-year-old girl before turning his attention to the third victim, who initially resisted his advances. Undeterred, Mariti forcibly assaulted her as well, before threatening all three victims that both their lives and their families’ safety would be compromised should they report the incidents.

Psychological impact and disclosure

The aftermath proved devastating for the victims. The 15-year-old left the church immediately following the assault, subsequently developing severe depression and engaging in self-harm. Meanwhile, the 17-year-old remained within the congregation due to fear, enduring a second assault and receiving inappropriate messages from Mariti attempting to coerce her into becoming his “wife”.

The case came to light when the 17-year-old’s mother discovered these communications, prompting a police report on 15 July 2023. Encouraged by her friend’s courage, the 15-year-old victim subsequently came forward to provide her testimony.

Investigation and conviction

Detective Sergeant Themba Jilimba of the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit led the investigation in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority. Despite Mariti’s continued protestations of innocence and claims that the victims had conspired against him, the State presented compelling evidence, including medical documentation and incriminating WhatsApp communications.

The substantial sentence reflects the court’s recognition of the egregious breach of trust inherent in cases where individuals in positions of authority exploit vulnerable young people under their care.
