A petition to garner public support of the exponential pothole crisis in ward 33 of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality is the start of a war on potholes in this ward.

Cllr René Steyn has launched the petition in the wake of the ever-increasing deterioration of roads across ward 32, which have reached a breaking point.

The petition calls on the municipality to take immediate and sustained action to repair potholes and address the dangerous lack of road signage at key intersections.

The petition comes in response to daily complaints from motorists, business owners, and pedestrians whose safety is compromised by crumbling infrastructure, unmarked intersections, and unlit crossings.

These conditions are not just inconvenient; they are life-threatening.

Over the past year, countless reports have been submitted to the municipality, yet little to no visible intervention has followed. In many areas, potholes span entire lanes, forcing vehicles to swerve into oncoming traffic.

“As part of a community-driven initiative focused on road safety, I have also documented dozens of hotspots and escalated these through council channels. However, the municipality’s silence cannot continue unchallenged,” Steyn says.

This petition is a direct call to action for the executive mayor, municipal manager, and the Department of Infrastructure to:

■ implement an emergency pothole repair plan for Ward 32;

■ install and restore critical road signage and markings at high-risk intersections; and

■ provide a transparent maintenance schedule and reporting platform for road repairs.

Residents and businesses of Ward 32 can access and sign the petition at forms.gle/9vh68D1TJgkhz4iS9.
