What used to be an upmarket and leafy street in Virginia has now become pothole-ridden. Apart from the numerous spots of sewage spillage, large potholes and grass polls in the middle of the road, there is also a developing sinkhole. A tattered piece of red and white barrier tape has been haphazardly placed to warn approaching vehicles of the impending danger. The sinkhole is already more than 2 m deep, and it stretches below the surface of the road in all directions. Driving down Van Der Stel Avenue is hazardous, and residents are concerned that humans or vehicles will become victims of Matjhabeng’s mismanagement.
