A member of Welkom Public Order Policing was shot during a robbery in progress at Elegant Fuel in Stateway early on Thursday morning.
The constable, who is a member of the Public Order Policing, was driving in a marked police vehicle and had stopped to refuel when the incident occurred.
He was shot on his right shoulder and his service firearm robbed. The policeman was taken to a hospital in Welkom.
The five suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash they had robbed from the cash registers and the safe.
The robbery happened at about 07:0 on 24/11. Three suspects entered the petrol station while two suspects remained outside in a white Polo with Free State registration numbers.
The District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Maj. Gen. Lerato Molale is appealing to business people to reinforce their security during opening and closing times. “Criminals must struggle to access business or even get behind the counters. We will never rest until we trace these armed robbers who shot one of our own police officers,” he said.
