The Welkom police are investigating an incident in which a young woman was robbed of her handbag and other personal belongings by a man she had apparently met on social media.

The woman alleges that she met with the man by the name of “Donald” near a high school on 3 October 2021.

“The police have issued a warning about scammers who lure unsuspecting victims through social media platforms to ultimately rob them,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, Lejweleputswa media liaison officer.

“For the sake of personal safety, one should never reveal their date and place of birth, home address or phone number, as this could put one at risk of identity theft and fraud. People must also never meet with strangers in secluded areas.”

Call Sgt Teswin Carls of the Welkom Detective Services on 072-294-9306 or dial the emergency number 08600-10111 with information concerning the suspect.
