Five suspects have been arrested after the Lejweleputswa SAPS received information following a spate of vicious kidnappings in the area.
The Lejweleputswa district has been plagued by several kidnapping cases where suspects would demand ransom for the victims to be released.
On Sunday (24/07) at about 15:30 the police received information which led to the five suspects being arrested in Thabong.
The Welkom Public Order Policing, Thabong Task Team and members of Thabong Serious and Violent Crimes led the operation.
“The first suspect was arrested at a house in Thabong. This led to his four accomplices being arrested in New Stands and the Gugulethu Informal Settlement,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liason officer for the Legjweleputswa SAPS.
Five cellphones, one magazine with seven rounds of live ammunitions were confiscated. Four of the suspects are foreign nationals and one a South African.
These suspects are facing charges of kidnapping, assault GBH, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of unlicensed ammunitions and violation of Illegal Immigrations Act.
The suspects are 23 to 29 years old.
The case is being investigated by Sgt Ishmael Sithole of Thabong Serious and Violent Crimes.
