During Operation Shanela that was held at various spots in the Free State, the police arrested 160 people for schedule 6 offences.

In the fight to deal with contact crimes, 133 suspects were arrested for assaults, 11 for rape, 7 for murder and 9 for attempted murder. For possession of dangerous weapons, 28 suspects were arrested. They also arrested 16 people for robberies.

On 25 May members of the Welkom Public Order policing reacted on information on a tuckshop where they found and seized illicit cigarettes and while members were busy with paperwork the suspect tried to bribe the officer by offering him R5 000. He was detained for bribery and possession of illicit cigarettes.

The fight against drugs continues as 66 suspects were arrested while 79 more were arrested during roadblocks and inspections by external stakeholders.

Detective tracing operations as part of the operation Shanela scope managed to trace and arrest 209 suspects who were in their radar. Then 124 people were arrested during operation Vala umgodi for contravention of the immigration act and others were found with gold bearing material.

Operations are continuing throughout the province and country wide, community members are urged to continue providing information on crimes taking place and to work with police to identify possible suspects.
