As part of planned, weekly operations to curb illicit mining in Free State, one suspect was arrested with more than 15 kg of suspected gold-bearing material and processing equipment in Phomolong.
On Saturday, 23 November, combat operators received and operationalised intelligence on illegal mining activities in the Phomolong informal settlement near Welkom.
Suspected gold-bearing material weighing at 15,86 kg and processing equipment, one yellow lephenduka with a stand, 17 steel balls, a steel chain, a steel plate used as pan, a cutting torch nozzle, mercury and salt were seized.
The 42-year-old suspect was immediately arrested. A case of possession of suspected gold-bearing material, gold processing equipment, and contravention of the Immigration Act was opened at the Welkom police station.
The collaboration between Operation Vala uMgodi role players, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and stakeholders, and private security companies at the Kopanong Mine continues, says Lt. Col Thabo Covane, police spokesperson for the Free State.
On Saturday, four suspects aged between 44 and 46 years, and employed by the mine, were arrested for attempting to smuggle contraband goods intended for underground illegal miners.
The police confiscated powder drinks, soya mince, bread, biltong, and peanuts from the two men and women who were employed by the mine as a winch operator, rock drill operator, and contracted underground assistants.
A case of conspiracy to commit crime (assisting illegal miners) and contravention of the Mine Health and Safety Act was opened at the Vierfontein Police Station.
