A member of the Welkom Public Order Policing was shot during a robbery at Elegant Fuel in Stateway today at about 07:00.
The constable was driving in a marked police vehicle and had stopped to refuel the vehicle when the incident occurred.
He was shot on his right shoulder and his service firearm robbed.
The policeman was taken to a hospital in Welkom.
The five suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash they had robbed from the cash registers and the safe.
Three suspects entered the petrol station while two suspects remained outside in a white Polo with Free State registration numbers.
The District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Maj. Gen. Lerato Molale, is appealing to business people to reinforce their security during opening and closing times.
“Criminals must struggle to access business or even get behind the counters. We will never rest until we trace these armed robbers who shot one of our own police officers,” he said.
