Members attached to the Welkom K9 Unit, Welkom Flying Squad and Operation Vala Umgodi operators nabbed two suspects for drug trafficking and possession of drugs.

On Tuesday, 10 December, at 18:38, Const. Isak Johannes Jacobus Van Wyk of Welkom K9 Unit received information of the Free State Provincial Counter Narcotics about a White Hino bus which was transporting boxes suspected to contain drugs.

The vehicle was at the Grasmere tollgate thought to be on its way to Cape Town.

The member, who was off-duty at the time, placed himself on duty and the information was operationalised.

Welkom Flying Squad members and Operation Vala Umgodi operators were activated and a way lay was conducted by at the off-ramp leading to the R34 road near Kroonstad.

The bus was pulled over and a search was conducted by the team.

They found 3 814 bundles of Chata edulis drug, popularly known as Khat plant or Bushman’s tea valued at R228 840.

The Hino bus which was used in commission of the crime and two cell phones which were used for communication purposes between parties involved were confiscated.

Two male suspects aged 45 and 51 were arrested for drug trafficking and possession of drugs and a case docket was opened at the Kroonstad police station.
