Three Lesotho nationals were arrested for illegal immigration and for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

On Saturday 1 March members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit, received intelligence about an armed suspect in Thabong.

“They immediately followed this up and went to a backroom in the Maspala Section of Thabong. They found a 38-year-old man and his 34-year-old wife, and a 37-year-old male visitor,” says Sgt. Mahlomola Kareli, SAPS Free State communication and liaison officer.

Kareli says the room was thoroughly searched and the police discovered a 9 mm firearm and ammunition, concealed under a bed.

All three suspects were arrested,” he says.

Further investigation revealed that all three suspects are foreign nationals and were unable to produce valid documentation authorizing their presence in South Africa.

They were subsequently charged with illegal immigration.
