Pedals put to the test

A total of 14 members of the Welkom Cycling Club took part in the interprovincial Free State Road Challenge, held in Welkom on 13 October.


A total of 14 members of the Welkom Cycling Club took part in the interprovincial Free State Road Challenge, held in Welkom on 13 October.

The race started and finished next to the Griffon Stadium, and the riders cycled on the R30 passing Odendaalrus, towards Bothaville, and then back to Welkom.

The U11 boys and girls completed 16 km (four 4 km laps); the U13 boys and U15 girls rode 24 km; the U15 boys and U17 girls did 35 km; the U17 boys, all of the women’s groups, and the men 60 years and older rode 70 km; with the junior boys, elite, U23, 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years, and 50 to 59 years age categories completing the 100 km course.

In the race for cyclists 60 years and older of 65 km, Ronel Bailey came first. She placed third overall in the race for women 65 and older.

Megan Nel came second overall in the women’s 100 km race, Angelique Nel third, and Louwra Slabbert fourth overall.

Jan de Bruyn finished third in the 65 km race for men 55 and older. Peter Muller Snr ended third in the 100 km for 50 and older, with Arrie Mall fourth in this category.

In the 100 km race Brendan Nel finished second overall and first in the elite men category, Wian Eloff third, and Micheal Benecke fifth. Peter Muller Jnr was second in the 30 and older group. In 45 and older, Tertius lotter was second and Martin Erasmus fourth.
