Old Welkomite passes away, memories remain

Many Welkomites will still remember Liesl Töpfer and her culinary delights.

Many Welkomites will still remember Liesl Töpfer and her culinary delights.

She arrived in Welkom from Germany in the early 1950’s and, after the passing of her beloved husband in a gliding accident in 1968, opened Liesl’s Delicatessen.

Her cold meats and famous baked cheesecake were the talk of the town. Five years later it was bought over and became the Red Ox.

Töpfer then took up an offer of joining the staff at DN Smith Jewellers.

This is where she worked for many years before retiring to Ballito on the North Coast.

Töpfer passed away on 8 May in Ballito at the age of 94 years.

She is survived by her three children, Karl-Heinz, Gerald and Ursula, and four grandchildren, as well as two great-grandchildren.
