The exceptional rugby prowess of a promising young athlete from Wessel Maree High School in Odendaalsrus has earned international recognition, with Tshiamo Ikaneng selected to represent South Africa in a prestigious global schools competition.
Ikaneng has been invited to join the NextGnXV UXi teams for the Global Schools Challenge Tournament, scheduled to take place from 14 to 19 December at the Mediterranean Sports Village near Salou, Spain.
Dedication to excellence
The versatile player, who operates as both full-back and fly-half, describes himself as an athlete driven by an unwavering passion for rugby and an insatiable desire to elevate his performance.
“Rugby has taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of constantly improving myself,” Ikaneng explains. “I’m fully committed to growing as a player, pushing my limits, and preparing for every opportunity that can elevate my career.”
For the young sportsman, the Spanish tour represents a pivotal moment in his athletic development. “This tour means a great deal to me—it’s an opportunity to test myself, learn from new environments, and showcase the dedication I’ve been investing in my training. It represents a significant step towards achieving the goals I’ve established for myself.”

Multi-disciplinary athletic achievement
Whilst rugby remains his primary focus as a member of his school’s first team, Ikaneng’s athletic abilities extend well beyond the rugby field. His diverse sporting portfolio has established him as one of the school’s most accomplished all-round athletes.
“I represented the Free State athletics team in high jump, which enhanced my athletic ability, explosiveness, and discipline,” he notes. “I also compete in first-team chess, where I’ve developed strategic thinking, patience, and mental toughness—qualities that serve me both on and off the field.”
This remarkable versatility has not gone unnoticed, earning Ikaneng the Most Versatile Student trophy at school—”a reminder that I can excel in different areas when I maintain my commitment,” he reflects.
His outstanding contributions to school sport have been further recognised through his selection as Sportsman of the Year for 2025.
Future aspirations
Ikaneng’s philosophy centres on continuous improvement and seizing every opportunity for growth. “Every training session, every challenge, and every opportunity brings me closer to becoming the best version of myself,” he concludes.
The upcoming Spanish tournament represents not merely a competitive opportunity, but a crucial stepping stone in the young athlete’s journey towards realising his rugby ambitions on an international stage.
