No serious injuries or loss of life were reported when, after an explosion, material was blown out of the Merriespruit 2A ventilation shaft in Virginia.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (01/03).

One member of the seven-man team involved in rehabilitating the Merriespruit 2A ventilation shaft, is receiving treatment after the explosion.

“The company can confirm that there were no serious injuries or loss of lives. The injured employee was part of the rehabilitation team,” says Max Manoeli, brand and group communications manager of Harmony Goldmine.

Manoeli says Harmony can confirm that there were positive gas readings at the time of the incident, however, the gas did not harm any of the seven employees.

He says Harmony is working in close collaboration with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), and is fully cooperating with the authorities, pending the ongoing investigations.

“We would like to re-iterate that the safety of our employees and the communities in which we operate is our key priority. We will share more information as it is released to us, and provide updates about the incident,” says Manoeli
