Residents of Hani Park, Bronville, attacked and assaulted a 16-year-old boy whom they suspected of raping a six-year-old girl.
“The suspect is under police guard in one of the hospitals in Matjhabeng,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.
On Wednesday, 7 December, at about 15:30 members of the Bronville police were summoned to a scene where a small girl had been raped, and her alleged rapist had been severly assaulted by members of the community.
“On arrival at a house in Hani Park, Bronville, the victim and suspect were found at the scene. The victim had identified the boy as being the one who had raped her, and the community then assaulted him,” says Thakeng.
The boy is facing rape charges.
“Residents are sternly warned not to take the law into their own hands, but to hand over people suspected to be involved in criminal activities so that a proper investigation can be done, and the suspected perpetrator can then be brought before a court of law,” says Thakeng.
