On Wednesday, 25 October, Matjhabeng employees woke up to the shock that their October salaries had not been paid into their bank accounts.
Social media was immediately abuzz.
On the various municipal WhatsApp groups messages started flying around. One irate municipal official penned an emotional message that included chastisement about the cuts in overtime and allowances, and decisions not to pay service providers that had resulted in the empty bank accounts.
“Then you go public and make statements that you are not fighting workers that the institution is intact?
“You behave like a double agent who is sent here to destroy the institution by destabilising the operations and destroying relations with workers.”
These irate employees have gone on to add that the mayor continues to involve himself in the administration, and this has now even affected salary matters.
In response to a media enquiry, Tshediso Tlali, spokesperson for the Matjhabeng Municipality, says the delay of salaries for October is as a result of ongoing legal process being resolved by the office of the municipal manager.
“The expectation is that salaries for this month will be processed today, 25 October, but the latest by tomorrow, 26 October.
“We wish to apologise for any inconvenience this delay may have caused,” he says.
