Private security officers were overpowered and a large quantity of copper and firearms robbed when they were attacked by more than 20 armed men on the Unisel Mine premises outside of Welkom.
On Sunday (31/07) at 21:00 a shootout took place between the armed assailants and the security officials.
The four security men were patrolling when they were attacked, and overpowered by the twenty armed assailants.
They were tied up in one of the guard rooms.
One of the guards was kicked and assaulted by the attackers.
Three 9 mm pistols, an AK assault rifle and a shotgun were taken from the security officers.
The suspects then proceeded to strip off the copper cable from the winder house on the mine premises.
The quantity and value of the robbedstolen copper is unknown, and a case of business robbery has been registered for further investigation.
A shotgun was found on the premises, and 24 rounds of live ammunition for the AK assault rifle were also found, with its magazine.
