The Welkom Secondary School in Bronville has done it again.

The school achieved a 91,8% pass rate, with 36,8% bachelor’s passes and 56% diploma passes in 2021.

“Even though we dropped in our pass rate percentage, our quality of pass improved. We also had ten subject distinctions and over 70 level 6’s,” says Gerald de Jager, principal of the school.

In 2021, the school celebrated excellence when their revised pass rate for 2020, after the remarking results were released, was 100%.

In 2020 a 100% pass rate was also achieved in 14 of the 16 subjects offered by the school.

De Jager took over as principal in 2018, when the school had a 56% matric pass rate.

He and his staff have taken Welkom Secondary from a “trap” school, which was labelled as dysfunctional, to a 100% pass rate in 2020, and a 91,8% pass rate in 2021.

In 2020 the school not only had to contend with the Covid-19 pandemic, but it was also plagued with gang fights.
