In an area plagued with gangsterism, crime, and drug abuse, residents in Humansdorp have banded together to host a mentor session at the Upperroom Family Worship Centre in Arcadia on March 6, with Minister Jos Refo De Hoop from the Netherlands as a guest speaker. The event is supported by the Humansdorp Minister’s Fraternal.

Chairman of the Humansdorp Minister’s Fraternal, Stephanus Baartman, said that with gangsterism and crime continuing to escalate in Humansdorp, the community is desperately seeking a solution.

He said that a group of residents have arranged a mentoring session specifically for young men in the community to encourage and empower them.

Baartman said that De Hoop, who was formerly known as a ‘big-time drug dealer,’ will be sharing his experience in the hope that it will motivate the youth.

“Through the event, we want to motivate the youth to refrain from getting involved in gangsterism and stop gangsterism throughout the town,” said Baartman.

He mentioned that the mentoring event, starting at 15:00, will be the first of its kind.

However, Baartman said that depending on the success of this event, they hope to kick off a series of mentorship sessions for the youth at a later stage.

“We hope that the event will help bring peace to the community. This event is the first step and we hope that young men will attend,” said Baartman. “We will also look at the interest and then look into a programme.”

He said that the Humansdorp Minister’s Fraternal supports the initiative with the residents hosting the event.
