An apparent land grab of ground situated between the St Helena Private Hospital, the Claws animal welfare society and an old age home has been thwarted for the time being.

Upon hearing of the landgrabbers’ intention, Thanduxolo Khalipha, executive mayor of Matjhabeng, immediately intervened.

They had already staked their claims when the process was stopped.

“The municipality is in talks with the Harmony Gold mining company about the land in question,” says Khalipha.

“The talks are at an advanced stage to donate the land to the municipality. We ask that residents be patient as the process to acquire the land is underway.”

Once the talks are concluded favourably, there will be a subsequent process by various government departments to make the land habitable.

“Any occupation before the completion of these processes is illegal,” says Khalipha.

“Law enforcement agencies will be called to effect the law.”
