History will be made when Matjhabeng, for the first time, sends a team of firefighters on a search and rescue mission to another province.
The team comprising two fire officers and six firefighters left for KaZulu-Natal on Tuesday (26/04) morning.
They will be in KwaZulu-Natal until 11 May to help authorities there after heavy rains on 11 and 12 April caused a state of disaster to be declared in the province.
During this two-day period parts of KwaZulu-Natal received between 200 mm and 400 mm of rainfall in a 24 hour period. To date 443 people are known to have lost their lives and about 48 people are missing or unaccounted for. It is estimated that more than 40 000 people have been displaced by these floods.
The team members are Sello Mogoera (station officer), Olga Nkokoane (station officer), Leon Bezidenhout (fire fighter), Villisetti Bezuidt (fire fighter), Atlehang Seleke (fire fighter), Teboho Shuping (fire fighter), Johannes Moloi (fire fighter) and Johannes Molupe (fire fighter).
