Welkom’s marathon wonder, Nkhethini Masupa, finished the famous Berlin Marathon in 2:39:50.
Masupa and Abe Nkomo, known nationally as the Team Vitality Twins, travelled to Germany for the 50th anniversary celebration of the globally famous Berlin marathon that was run on 29 September.
A record of 58 000 runners took part.
This was Masupa’s second Boston.
With his phenomenal time, Masupa has achieved the world championship qualifying standard of 2:48:00 for the men’s 50 to 54 year age group, which qualifies him for registration to run in the 2025 Abbott World Marathon Majors (WMM) Marathon Championship series.
Masupa and Nkomo have been invited to be part of the World Age Category Championships to be held within the New York City Marathon on 2 November 2025.
September was a busy month for Masupa. This accomplished athlete was able to tick off three major events: the 53 km Jozi Ultra Marathon on 1 September, then the 42 km Vaal Marathon, before ending the phenomenal month with his feat at the Berlin Marathon.
Masupa’s list of achievements so far this year are praiseworthy. In his age category, he won first place in Welkom’s Mielie Marathon of 42 km; first place in the Joburg North City 42 km race; first place in the Kosmos 3-in-1 42 km event and second place in its 21 km event; second place in the Om Die Dam 50 km race; second place in the 56 km Two Oceans marathon, first place in the N12 Ultra 50 km, and fifth place in the 86 km Comrades Marathon.
