The People’s Market has moved from the traditional flea market grounds in North Park to its new home on the Welkom THS sports grounds. These changes include a brand new security fence around the sports terrain where the market will be held, the introduction of three-phase power, and the adjoining hostel complex made available for exhibitors from afar to stop-over for the night, and still be close to the terrain.

With over 90 stall holders and the number steadily growing, the Our People’s Market has become firmly established on its new premises at the Welkom Technical High School (THS).

Held on the second Saturday of every month, the Welkom Publicity Association (WPA) has implemented major changes to their monthly market.

“Due to the ongoing strike action by municipal workers and the state of the inner city as a result of the non-collection of refuse, the monthly market had to make a move. The headmaster of THS has made his grounds available and is prepared to go the extra mile to ensure that the market has first-class facilities,” says Dulcie Harris of the WPA.

These changes include a brand new security fence around the sports terrain where the market will be held, the introduction of three-phase power, and the adjoining hostel complex made available for exhibitors from afar to stop-over for the night, and still be close to the terrain.

“This is a huge bonus. The whole terrain is being marked with lines and numbers. The toilets are well maintained and staffed by cleaners,” she says.

According to Brian Emmenis, WPA chairman, his team is working round the clock to get the market back on track.

“I am pleased to welcome four new members to my team. They are all exhibitors and are able to guide us as we move forward,” says Emmenis.

The new-look market has something for everybody. There is a dedicated and secure kiddies play area, a major Car Boot Sale, and numerous stalls with a large variety of products. A major plus point is that exhibitors and flea market patrons alike can park in the large secure car park right next to the market.

The market will open Saturday, 9 March, at 08:00 and closes at 14:00.
