An undisclosed amount of cash was taken when five armed men robbed Transito Cash and Carry in Welkom on Saturday.

When one of the employees entered the premises when he arrived at work, he was told to leave the building as there was a robbery in progress.

“When he got outside he took out his cellphone to call the police, but he was approached by a man who showed him that he was armed. Three additional men were seen fleeing the scene towards a white Toyota Corolla with number plates HCD 579 FS,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa SAPS.

A fifth man standing at the business’ gates also got into the vehicle, and the perpertrators fled the scene. The number plates on the get away vehicle are false, says Thakeng.

A manhunt has been launched for the five armed suspects. Det. Sgt. Andrew Lechesa of Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes can be contacted on 060-985-9330 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
