A renewed manhunt has been launched for a man who allegedly raped a woman in Paballong Village, Welkom, in 2022.

The 30-year-old employee of a wholesaler in Welkom was on her way to work on 7 November when she was stopped in the middle of the veld by an unknown man.

It is alleged that he raped her and took her cellphone, and then threatened that he would kill her like he did a man who he claimed to have burned to death in Paballong Village.

The perpetrator had a woman’s handbag with him. He used this to threaten the victim, by telling her that the owner of the bag had not co-operated with him.

The victim managed to flee towards the main road in Reitz Park, where she was helped by two men who contacted the Welkom police.

A case of rape was registered for further investigation.

The suspect was wearing a grey jersey, blue jean pants, a camouflage cap and black sneakers, with dark sunglasses. He has a scar on the right side of his face and he is tall.

Anyone with information that could help with tracing the suspect can contact Det. Sgt Lehlohonolo Fonya of the Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit on 071-032-2512 or dial the Crime Stop number, 08600-10111.
