The Matjhabeng municipality intends to find entities to manage and lease out at least eight public sports facilities in Welkom, Riebeeckstad, Hennenman, and Virginia.
These facilities will include the Welkom Club, Rovers Club, Griffons Stadium, Harvinia Sports Grounds, Riebeeckstad Sports Complex, Odendaalsrus Tennis Courts, Hennenman Sports Complex, and the Hennenman Bowling Clubhouse and Courts.
Various sports such as rugby, cricket, netball, bowling, squash, tennis, football, and hockey are played at Rovers, with readily available apartments and chalets located there.
The Welkom club houses activities and space for bowling, a private gym, tennis academy, squash, rugby, the Lejweleputswa fitness club, pole dancing, a main bar, and a ladies’ bar.
At the Riebeeckstad sports complex there is provision made for a golf driving range, squash, bowling, and the Riebeeckstad pigeon club.
At the old traffic department there is a bar (Guppy’s Pub) and the recreation hall. The Welkom swimming pool is the home of Welkom Multi-Sport.
The municipality has already received two individual offers for lease agreements for the Harvinia sports fields and the Riebeeckstad golf driving range.
The motion was brought before the council on Tuesday, January 30.
