The police enforced Operation Road Freight, when a roadblock was conducted between Ventersburg and Kroonstad on 14 February.
The operational commander was Col. Senobia Solomon, leading SAPS members of the Lejweleputswa district police stations, the Welkom K9 unit, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Public Order Policing (Pop) and the Department of Home Affairs.
When a vehicle was seen stopping about 400 m from the roadblock, members of the Welkom K9 unit decided to investigate.
A man was found hiding a bag on top of the hill, in the veld. The police approached and requested to search the bag, and 43 packets of what is alleged to be Swaziland dagga, which weighed 20,233 kg with a street value of R73 000, was found and seized.
A 34-year-old man was arrested for dealing in dagga. Sanele Christopher Mkhonta appeared in the Ventersburg Magistrate’s Court on 15 February, and the case was postponed until 20 February for bail application.
