A search is being conducted to find Daniel Gapelelwe Moentane (47), who could assist the Lejweleputswa Police with its investigations after an elderly pensioner was kidnapped, threatened and robbed of his life savings by bogus cops.
The victim from Welkom was kidnapped by fake police officers and was then robbed of R60 000, which was deposited into Moentane’s account.
During September 2020 the victim was approached by four African men who posed as police officers and the fifth, a woman, was called a police captain.
He was forced to the bank in the Welkom Central Business District, where he deposited R40 000 cash in the bank account of Moentane.
The suspects released the pensioner and he realised that he had been robbed. He then registered a case of kidnapping.
A thorough investigation was conducted and the bank account holder was found to be residing in Klerksdorp, which was visited by the Welkom investigating unit.
Moentane’s wife was traced and she told the investigator that they were divorced. She said Moentane was residing in Welkom, where he was looking for a job.
“The account has been blocked, but in excess of R18 000 remains in the account. Moentane can assist Welkom Police with this investigation,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer.
Anyone who knows where Moentane is, or who could help to trace him, can contact Det. WO Elliot Khutsoane of the Welkom Detective Services on 083-940-1743.
