The London Marathon is known for breaking records, mostly its own records, and this year’s 45th edition, ran on 27 April, had more to break.
Never to be outdone, one of the Goldfields’ own famous long-distance runners, Nkhetheni Masupa from Welkom, participated and ended in overall position 632 (56 608 behind him) and got an impressive age category position 13.
The 2025 edition set a new Guinness World Record title for the most finishers in a marathon, after 56 640 entrants completed the race. This record was held by the 2024 New York Marathon, where 55 646 crossed the finishing line. Masupa finished in 2:39:49.
The 2025 London Marathon has broken its own record for the world’s biggest one-day fundraising event after the 2025 race have so far generated more than £75m (over R1.8 Billion ) for charity.
Again, a staggering 1 133 813 athletes have already applied to run the 2026 London marathon and it’s a new world record. Last year’s world record total was 840 318 for the 2025 TCS London marathon.
Masupa was invited to participate in this record- breaking marathon by the Sports4Ubuntu charity organisation.

The visit created memories I’ll never forget, after the marathon I went to the Wembley Stadium to watch my favourite English football team, Manchester City playing. The following day, Monday I did the Etihad Stadium tour, home of Manchester City. What a trip what a treat.
Prior to the London Marathon, ran the gruesome 73,3 km Kosmos 3-in-1 on 8 March, the 50 km Om Die Dam race in Hartebeespoort on 15 March and the 56 km and 21 km Two Oceans on 5 and 6 April in Cape Town; before the London Marathon.
“Later this year, I will be out to America for the New York City Marathon on 3 November. This event is by far the largest marathon in the world, with over 2 million spectators each year.”
The Abbott World majors Masupa has done so far are Berlin, twice and London marathon. “Next year I’m planning to do Boston, Cape Town and Sydney marathon. Cape Town marathon will be its inaugural event after being accepted in Abbott World Marathon Majors from next year, ” says Masupa
But for now, Masupa’s focus wil shift to Comrades Ultra Marathon happening on Sunday June 8.
