A big honour has befallen one of Welkom’ s own, Eon van Zyl, with his promotion to the national panels.

Van Zyl started his rugby referee career in 2015, and over the years he has continued to surpass all the challenges associated with taking up the whistle.

With hard work and dedication, Van Zyl did several top-rank tournaments before his appointment which include, among others, the U13 Craven Week (2017), U18 LSEN Craven Week (2018), U18 LSEN Craven Week (2019), U18 Academy Week (2019), U16 Grant Khomo Week (2023), and the U16 Grant Khomo Week final (2023).

Recently, Van Zyl proved yet again why he is one of South Africa’s top referees when he was selected to officiate during the first couple of rounds in the Varsity Shield tournament.

His performance during this top tournament was exceptional, and many eyes have been on him ever since.

Rugby has always been in his blood and he played the game from a young age. Van Zyl matriculated from the Riebeeckstad High School in 2025, and immersed himself in the world of rugby thereafter.

“As representatives of the Griffons Rugby Union for referees, we want to congratulate Eon van Zyl on his outstanding achievement. We are truly proud of you,” said the Griffons team.
