“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
According to the world population review, South Africa is ranked 10th in the list of highest suicide rates, with about 23 suicides for every 100 000 people.
Research conducted by the University of Cape Town in 2021 showed that isolation during the pandemic led to feelings of uncertainty, economic strain and bereavement, resulting in anxiety that led some to suicide.
It is against this backdrop that I want to encourage you to never give up.
Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us in John 16:33 that peace is found in him. In this world, we will have trouble but we must not despair, for Christ has overcome the world.
“We will always have seasons of struggles and testing. There are times when everything we attempt to do will seem to go wrong.” – This quote from T. D. Jakes is one of my favourites.
During such times it is only our faith that can sustain us. It is paramount that we hold the Word of God in our hearts so that when we are squeezed we can produce love, joy, peace and kindness.
Barack Obama also stated: “To anyone out there who’s hurting — it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help. It’s a sign of strength.”
Many of us have been approached by someone asking for help. I pray that we find it in our hearts to want to help someone daily. That one act of kindness may just be what saves the suicidal person. For those that can provide the funding, more institutions for improved mental health are needed in our country.
We respond differently to difficulties, so, let us not be too judgmental on our brethren.
Remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Our country is going through a rough patch. However, this too shall pass.
The churches are open. I encourage you to go out and seek fellowship in the Lord. Christ has time for you. He is the same God that enabled Sarah to bear a child in her old age, as she considered Him who had promised to be faithful. – Grace Mufara, Covenant Apostolic Church, Virginia
