An unknown man, aged between 25 and 35 years, has died in hospital after he was attacked by a mob in Kgotsong, Bothaville, on Sunday, 15 October, on allegations of rape.
It is alleged that the deceased attempted to rape a woman after he followed her while on her way home. The woman screamed for help and community members came out in numbers and assaulted him.
Bothaville police were called to the scene and rescued the badly injured man. They took him to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
“We are pleading with the communities to not take the law into their own hands, but allow investigations to confirm allegations and bring perpetrators before the court of law,” said Capt Lorraine Earl, Free State police spokesperson.
Investigations are underway to identify all who took part in the attack.
Bothaville detectives are also pleading to anyone who might have information on who the unknown man is, to contact Det Sgt Samuel Seloana on 073-925-4882, the crime line on 08600-10111, or leave an anonymous tip-off on the MySaps App.
