Three suspects have appeared in the Virginia Magistrates’ Court in connection with the hijacking and kidnapping of a lecturer employed at the Welkom campus of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State.
Khatliso Edwin Makhetha (28) of Meloding, Virginia, disappeared with his vehicle, a black Ford Fiesta, on 5 May.
The suspects, who are facing kidnapping and hijacking charges after they were arrested in June, are Mokhali Albert Lekesi (37), Mosebi Mahajane (43) and Yonela Samacala (25).
The three have abandoned bail, and the case has been postponed to Wednesday (12/07) for further investigation into the matter.
Makhetha’s vehicle was found in Lesotho, and the two occupants were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. They are still awaiting extradition to South Africa.
The investigation team continues with the search for Makhetha.
