The Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF) has implemented a communities and justice programme for 120 learners at the Marematlou Secondary School in Virginia.

Under the directorship of Pitso Mereko, provincial co-ordinator of the SSAF, the programme will run until 23 May.

“We had Ntate Tshabangu of the Department of Basic Education and officials of the Matjhabeng public safety and transport department inspire the learners with a law enforcement lecture. The hashtag of the programme is #1starfish@atime,” says Mereko.

He says South Africa is losing youths on the roads because they drive without driving licences.

“Young people are reckless, and drive while intoxicated or texting.

“The overloading of motor vehicles, overtaking where they should not, and picking up strangers leads to people losing their lives, as they could be highjacked or robbed while offering lifts,” says Mereko.
