There has been a noteworthy increase in kidnappings in the Lejweleputswa area.

Several incidents where hikers are given lifts and kidnapped along the way have been registered at police stations throughout the region.

The kidnappers have been reported as three African males speaking Zulu and Sotho.

“When they have perpetrated a kidnapping they will demand a ransom, which must be paid into the victim’s bank account,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa SAPS.

Thakeng says the police have issued a stern warning to avoid the following hiking spots: Joel Mine adjacent to Beatrix Mine, the Allanridge hiking spot on R30 national road, Tshepong Mine at Odendaalsrus, Jazz Corner in Odendaalsrus, Harmony Mine Saaiplaas and Manny’s in Welkom towards the Bloemfontein road.

Anyone with information about the kidnappers or kidnappings is requested to call Capt. Tieho Flyman of Provincial Organised Crime on 082-536-2683, or the police emergency number 08600-10111.
