A motion of no confidence has formally been lodged against the embattled executive mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Thanduxolo Khalipha .
He has been found guilty on one count of assault and two counts of crimen injuria.
Coreen Malherbe, leader of the DA in Matjhabeng, says they welcome the judgement.
“This is not only a win for the Matjhabeng community, it also reinforces the principles of accountability and the rule of law, especially for politicians who believe they are above it,” she says.
The mayor’s actions reveal a lack of character and that he was never worthy of his position of leadership, especially because he attacked those who were meant to protect him, she says.
The DA demands that Khalipha resign or that he be removed by his party in the interest of residents of Matjhabeng.
“We submitted a motion of no confidence on Tuesday. We will continue to advocate for the rights of Matjhabeng residents.”
Manie Pretorius, FF Plus councillor in Matjhabeng, says they too welcome the guilty verdict, but demand further action be taken in terms of previous council decisions regarding municipal assets in Khalipha’s possession.
“The party will support any attempt – also a motion of no confidence – to get rid of him,” says Pretorius.
An informed source told Vistathat the ball is now in the court of Charles Stofile, speaker of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, to initiate disciplinary processes against Khalipha.
The ANC will also have to convene its regional and provincial structures to discuss the way forward regarding Khalipha’s replacement.
Khalipha will be sentenced on 12 December, with his bail extended.
