Welkom’s Miné de Klerk (22) dominated the women’s shot put at the University of Nebraska’s Graduate Classic in Lincoln on 17 January.

Representing the Huskers, De Klerk secured first place with a powerful 17,71m toss at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

De Klerk matriculated from the Goudveld-Hoërskool in 2021, where she was headgirl.

At school she excelled in athletics (shot put and discus) before heading to the University of Oregon on a sports scholarship.

She is a South African athlete who specialises in the shot put and discus throw. She was the double medallist at both the 2021 and 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships.

De Klerk won gold in shot put on both occasions and added medals for discus throw, taking silver in 2021 and bronze in 2022.
