A Ghanaian national has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by the Kroonstad Regional Court for illegal possession of non-ferrous metals.

Alex Tweneboa (37) appeared on 6 October.

The case stems from an incident on 5 January 2022, when Tweneboa received a surprise visit from members of the Serious Organised Crime unit at his business site, after they had received information that he was operating a scrap yard.

When the Hawks searched the premises, these members of the SAPS’ Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation found copper cable hidden on the roof.

The non-ferrous metal, which was positively identified as belonging to Transnet, was estimated to be worth about R280 000.

Tweneboa was immediately arrested, but was released on R2 000 bail.

The sentence he received has been suspended for five years.
